Wrong Way: Go Back

There’s a better way to cut traffic congestion and make Melbourne a Greener city.

1. A fast rail link from Doncaster to the City along the Eastern Freeway

When the Eastern Freeway was built 30 years ago, the plan was to put a train line down the middle. In the whole of the City of Manningham, a city of 120 000 people, there is not one single train or tram line. This missing link in the system would cut car travel on the Eastern Freeway by twenty percent, particularly at peak times, and get people from Doncaster Shoppingtown to the city in around 20 minutes. It would replace the current bus, (which takes 45 minutes from Doncaster to the City) and could be a light rail, heavy rail or hybrid system connected to feeder bus services in the City of Manningham and extending further out to Ringwood.

In 2003, the Northern Central City Corridor Strategy proposed a feasibility study to determine the best options for the Doncaster rail link. We’re still waiting.
