Moreland residents say No Road Tunnel
Moreland Council called a public meetings to discuss the proposed road tunnel.
Greens Maribyrnong Councillor and Melbourne Transport Forum representative Janet Rice proposed a 30 year transport plan for Melbourne that would result in sixty percent of trips by public transport, bicycles or walking and forty percent by car.
“That means more tram and bus services connecting local activity centres, running every 10 minutes throughout the day and night, seven days a week,” she said. “This tunnel is not needed and will be a waste of money.”
Cr Rice challenged the Report’s assumption that ninety percent of all trips will always be by car or truck.
“Eddington’s assumption is wrong because of our responsibility to be tackling climate change,” Cr Rice told more than one hundred people attending the public meeting at the Brunswick Town Hall last Sunday.
“Its almost small print that his plan will do nothing for greenhouse,” she said. “Imagine that: spending $20 billion on transport in an era defined by climate change and admitting that your plan does nothing to address it.”
Carlo Carli, the ALP Member for Brunswick who has been spruiking his opposition to the road tunnel was asked if he would vote against planned laws that will facilitate the tunnel by short circuiting the usual planning requirements. He declined to answer.
