The road tunnel is ridiculous idea whose only defence against sheer stupidity is complete ignorance.
I fully support the Greens on this.

Damian's point is very valid. Our bus lines are poorly networked, with the 'spaghetti syndrome' - disconnected and circular bus routes that fail to offer a decent alternative to the car. Straight lines from A to B should be a top priority; nobody wants deliberately inefficient services that offer them nothing.

Sir Rod Edington, with all do respect, is a man that grew up and lived in a different era. That era was dominated by the car, and his design for Melbourne (the east-west tunnel, and north-south underground rail) is something that is typical of people of that era. I like the idea of the underground rail, but are these projects realistic when there has been next to nothing done for extending lines, increasing services and upgrading the efficiency.

There was an interesting article in Saturday's 'The Age' (Nov. 8), that indicated the need of funding to areas around train, tram, and bus stations. This is something not to be overlooked. Many a time I have had to get off a train or bus where it is not desirable to be at all, and unlocked my bike from a fence or sign post and ridden down a road with no bike lane - cars swerving around me at 80km/h. It is not fun for me nor the driver, and I ask the government to put in more bike lanes (preferably free of car parking!), and safer walking walking paths (where the pedestrian does not feel like they have to be always on the lookout for cars).

I live in Melton and i reguarly catch the train from Melton either into the city or to footscray where i go to Victorian university and it's very frustrating having to wait an hour if you miss a train after 10 am and as the trains are so irregular there's always so many people trying to get into the carriages every time a train pulls into the station.

If trains to Meltons were electricfied, then more trains would be go get to the station and the trains would be less cramped.

hopefully this situation with the melton trains will change over the next few years, but sadly i'm not sure it will.

I live across the road from a trail line in West Footscray. I have pblic transport at my doorstep, yet I drive to work and into the city because I refuse to use public transport, it is my biggest nightmare!
The smell, congestion, cost.....
When I sit outside and look across the road I imagine this train line and all city fringe train lines being built underground. And the existing lines being made into tram lines, bike tracks and walking tracks lined with trees, art and landscaping.
Why?
It will allow people living in outer suburbs less congestion on trains, and people living in inner city suburbs on trams, and encouraging all people to stop a few extra stops before the city and walk or ride the rest of the way. You will have two transport systems working on top of each other, and beautify our Melbourne at the same time,.

Now that will make me stop driving to work!

The cost estimate for the road tunnel is something like 9 billion. 9 billion should be spent on Melbourne's Public Transport network instead.

I think the road tunnel proposal is a stupid spend.

Public Transport is the only way our city will grow sustainably. Invest the money into public transport infrastrucutre. We need safe, frequent, cheap, public transport that services not only direct passage to the city but also allows fast cross suburb travel (option - express buses from hub train stations on different train lines).

Lynn Kosky what are you doing? 'Myki' is a joke and the total lack of public transport infrastructure spending is a joke too.... ooooh weee $115mil spent on a 10km extension of the Cragieburn line.... come on, that is a lame excuse for progress. The line was already there, all you did was build a new station and electrify it. And if that is the ball park, then we're looking at 4 to 6billion to 'get this city rolling'!

Maybe we should bypass this 'sit on hands' State Gov and get Kev to open up the 'future fund' piggy bank.... he said theres $20Bil for infrastructure... being a major city we gotta be worth at least 2 or 3bil! That would at least get the ball rolling.

Greg.... keep pushing!

The Vic government has a really terrible record in recent times on almost anything to do with the environment. All of their so called long term solutions involve engaging large contractors to do major works without adequate public discussion. Solutions to existing problems such as dredging the bay, desalination, piping water from the Murray and the East West tollway are one stop shop solutions. they lack real vision and allow the government to avoid tackling complex, difficult issues as part of their on going commitment to the public.
